In short: ETQ Reliance (now Octave Reliance, following ETQ's separation from Hexagon into the independent company Octave in May 2026) is an enterprise-grade, no-code, cloud-native quality management system used across many industries. Qualitum does not compete for that role. It runs above the QMS and automates the validation authoring and traceability work, on infrastructure the customer controls.
Where ETQ Reliance is genuinely strong
ETQ was founded in 1992 and its Reliance platform is one of the most established enterprise EQMS products on the market. It is a multi-tenant, cloud-native system built on AWS, with more than 600 customers across manufacturing, medical devices, electronics, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals and automotive.
Its strengths are enterprise breadth and configurability:
- 40+ configurable, no-code applications covering document control, CAPA, audits, risk management, training, non-conformance, supplier quality and EHS — adaptable without custom code.
- Enterprise scale and connectivity. Reliance is designed as a quality data backbone that connects to ERP, MES and connected-worker systems, extending quality processes from the boardroom to the shop floor.
- Data and AI focus. ETQ positions Reliance around making quality data actionable, with analytics and AI-driven insight, and offers expedited validation and risk-based verification to reduce the platform's own testing effort.
For an organisation whose problem is a consistent enterprise quality backbone across sites and business systems, Reliance is a leading answer to that question.
Where the two fit together
An enterprise QMS governs quality processes and holds the data. It does not author the validation deliverables that regulated systems require.
The requirement specification, the risk assessment derived from it, the covering test cases, the traceability maintained through change, the summary report — that content is still written by qualified people, regardless of how well the QMS backbone connects to the rest of the business. That is the production work Qualitum automates.
| Function | ETQ Reliance | Qualitum |
|---|---|---|
| Enterprise QMS backbone, document control, CAPA, audit trail | Yes | No — deliberately |
| No-code process configuration across 40+ apps | Yes | No |
| Authoring URS, risk assessments, protocols | Manual, in-platform | Agent-generated, human-approved |
| Requirement-to-test traceability | Team-maintained | Derived and maintained continuously |
| Connectivity to ERP / MES / shop floor | Native | Via the record system |
| Model and inference location | Vendor (multi-tenant) architecture | Customer-controlled |
Qualitum produces structured, importable output that lands in your system of record.
Your enterprise QMS backbone stays exactly where it is; the authoring load moves off your senior people.
Adaptive methodology
Reliance's strength is a configurable model applied consistently across a large estate. Qualitum's agents are configured to whatever methodology the organisation already runs — its risk model, categorisation logic, template library and review gates — through forward-deployed engineering. One governs and connects the enterprise; the other performs the authoring within it.
Where Qualitum is different in kind
Automation rather than configuration. Reliance lets you configure how quality work flows; Qualitum performs the validation authoring within that flow, under human approval.
Private AI by default. Reliance is a multi-tenant SaaS platform on AWS. Qualitum is deployment-agnostic: the customer controls which model is used and where inference occurs, including entirely within their own environment — frequently the deciding factor for regulated content under residency or internal-policy constraints.
Engineered output quality. The model is interchangeable; reliability comes from evaluation suites, guardrails, multi-pass sampling, benchmarks and validated reference data.
Honest limitations
- Reliance is a broad enterprise EQMS spanning many industries and processes far beyond validation. If you need that backbone, Reliance is a leading option and Qualitum does not replace it.
- ETQ's scale, industry coverage and installed base substantially exceed ours.
- For general manufacturing quality management outside regulated validation authoring, Reliance's breadth is the point; Qualitum is focused on the validation authoring layer specifically.
